 | Anime News: FUNimation Downsizes |
Anime powerhouse FUNimation has reduced its staff, reportedly by around 10%. In
conjunction with the reduction in force, FUNimation shut down Anime
Online, its shortlived attempt to create a broad-based news and social
networking site for anime fans. Anime Online had launched in February into a crowded space with skilled competitors.

 | Anime News: Singapore Company Cracks Down on Anime Downloads |
According to a news report on the enforcement of copyright rules outside Japan, Singapore anime licensor Odex has started a campaign to eliminate illegal downloads of anime online. Beginning in May, Odex began sending cease and desist letters to the names and addresses of people whose download history had been exposed. The warning letters state that people who continue to share and download anime illegally will be reported to police. Odex is requesting that police search the homes of anyone who is reported.

Chinese authorities have begun cracking down on pirated products featuring the popular Japanese manga "Death Note," which they say is adversely affecting the mental and physical health of young people.

 | Anime News: Anime DVD sales up 48%, but Navarre reports loss |
Boosted by strengthening anime programming, Navarre Corp. is working on shoring up its finances through its just ended fiscal 2007 fourth quarter and year.
Navarre posted a $2.2 million loss for the three months ended March 31. That compares to a $1.1 million gain for the same period in 2006.
Quarterly revenue fell 2% to $168.6 million.
A bright spot for the company was its Funimation division, where sales of anime DVD titles grew 48% in the full fiscal year compared to the prior 12 months. Sales were spurred on by Fullmetal Alchemist, Robotech and Dragon Ball Z franchise releases, among others.

 | Anime News: First look: 'Speed Racer's' demon on wheels |
Emile Hirsch was 6 years old when he saw his first episode of the cartoon Speed Racer and, more important, caught a glimpse of the Mach 5.
"It was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen," Hirsch says by phone from Germany, where filming will begin next week on the movie adaptation. "That's when I started thinking it would be great to be on TV. And have one of those."
Sixteen years later, he finally got behind the wheel of the speedster, which gets its first look here and will be at the heart of the film, due May 9, 2008.

 | Anime News: Sci Fi Targets Late Night |
In an attempt to lure younger viewers and expand the reach of its
brand, Sci Fi Channel is launching Ani-Monday, a two-hour late-night
block of anime programming. Set to premiere June 11, the slate will put
the network in direct competition with Cartoon Network's late-night
ratings powerhouse Adult Swim, which programs anime as well.

 | Anime News: Survey: 80% of Manga/Internet Cafes Have "Residents" |
In recent years, Japan has seen an increase in Internet and Manga Cafes
that are open 24 hours. These cafes include conveniences such as
unlimited drinks, a large library of manga, private booths for internet
and video game use, and (in some locations) showers that customers can
use. Although their popularity continues to grow, these cafes are now
the focus of what the Japanese government considers to be a serious
social problem.

 | Anime News: Hideaki Anno To Announce New Eva Films On February 17th |
From Anime News Service:
New Evangelion film series "general superintendent"
Hideaki Anno will release an "emergency statement" regarding the
project on the 17th of this month. This will mark the first time the
Director has spoken to the public regarding the 4 new animated
features. Additionally, its been revealed that the first Evangelion
Shin Gekijou Ban film will be released to Japanese theaters on
September 1st, 2007. Anno's statement will be made in several media
including a film projected poster, to be shown in around 50 theaters
across Japan. A special message in all white colored text will read:
"Animation set in an impoverished future Japan". A 15 second video clip
will be screened simultaneously. Those who have seen these media have
noted that several Japanese katakana characters in the "Evangelion"
title have been changed over the previous spelling. A different "E"
character is used and the "O" has been replaced with "WO". The first
fillm is expected to encompass the storyline of the first 6 TV
epeisodes. A special internet website will be launched through Yahoo
Japan to coincide with the announcement on the 17th. Content there will
include messages from the production staff. There have been around 6000
merchandise items produced around Evangelion to date, with total sales
approaching 150 billion Yen or more.
